Teach your students Conflict Resolution and the ultimate plan for dealing with bullying. Don’t be HOT, Don’t be COLD, Be Cool!

Bullying can make life miserable, even dangerous, for children in lower elementary grades.  It can be so frightening to students that they might even refuse to come to school. If not handled effectively, bullying can cause severe distress and can lead to physical injury and/or social withdrawal. Managed well, the negative impacts of bullying can be minimized and the bullying can be eliminated. This module empowers young children by demonstrating methods that they can use to effectively cope with bullying and teaching when to enlist in the help of adults.

BeCool teaches students about the three basic ways we respond to bullying: Aggressively (HOT), Passively (COLD) or Assertively (COOL). In each of the video scenarios, children are challenged by a“difficult person or situation. Your students will watch as their video peers hesitate and then model three different ways to respond to conflict: Giving Up (COLD), Blowing Up (HOT) or Staying in Control (COOL).

In the two vignettes presented in this module, students will see strategies for coping with bullying first hand and will have opportunities to practice them in the safety of your classroom. They will see how Aurora uses the 4-step Assertion plan to cope with bullying from her friends in the form of peer pressure and see how George and his friends use anti-victim strategies with unknown bullies.
