SafetySmart-1: At Home, On the Job, On the Street

Avoiding Hazards and Preventing Accidents
Safety should always come first; many students learn this the hard way. SafetySmart-1 teaches students NotSmart and SafetySmart ways to avoid life’s daily hazards and pitfalls — at home, on the job and on the streets.

Part 1: How to Be Safe at Home:
Teaches how to avoid injuries at home, including: safety in the kitchen and bathroom; safety using electrical cords and appliances; and safeguarding against house fires.  30 mins

Part 2: How to Be Safe as a Pedestrian:
Teaches basic pedestrian safety, including: crosswalk savvy and defensive walking; how to pick a safe route / avoiding shortcuts; and responding to being followed.   30 mins

Part 3: How to Be Safe Using Transportation
Teaches transportation safety, including: using a bus schedule; self-protection and safety on the bus; and saying “no” to drinking drivers.  30 mins

SafetySmart-2: Emergency Help & Community Resources

Getting Emergency Help
SafetySmart-2, teaches students to recognize what to do if an accident does occur; when it’s an emergency; what community agency to contact; and how to explain their immediate situation to authorities. This program also alerts students to the accessibility of free medical information.

Part 4: How to Use Fire Department Resources:
Teaches students basic home fire safety and when and how to call 911; identifies the variety of fire department services; and fire extinguisher / smoke detector use & maintenance.  18 mins

Part 5: How to Contact and Interact With Police:
Teaches the do’s and don’ts of interacting with the police; how the police can help in non-emergencies such as when the student is lost; cooperating with law enforcement; and contacting 911 successfully.  20 mins

Part 6: How to Access Free Health Care: Teaches how to recognize when medical care is needed and how to receive health care even without money for services; ER services; first aid tips.  14 mins

Part 7: How to Get Help from the Pharmacy: Teaches how to use the pharmacist as a health consultant; and over-the-counter vs. prescription drugs.  14 mins
