Soft Skills #2, #7
Part 1: Being Cooperative SCANS PQ-C9

Students will earn why being cooperative is rated the #2 personal quality employees must have to be retained or advanced. Employers want staff who can get along and work as a team . While at work, it's harmony the boss looks for, and it's respecting , not necessarily liking, that matters. |
Module 3
Workplace Decorum
Soft Skills #3, #4, #5
Part 1: Dress Appropriately
SCANS F16

Students will learn that bosses judge how seriously employees take their jobs by how they dress. Neatness, grooming and adherence to company dress codes tell the boss that a worker cares enough about his or her job to prepare for it before the workday begins. |
Part 2: Being Ethical

Students will learn that bosses often view employees as being with them or against them. Not reporting dishonesty, should the boss discover it, is viewed with suspicion. They'll learn that bosses look at passing blame as a lie or a sign of weak character. |
Part 2: Being Helpful
SCANS: PQ-C9

From the boss's point of view, the best way to look out for #1 is to look out for the team. Being able to switch gears and offer help to co-workers when it's needed is essential. Students will learn why the boss sees helpful co-workers as more than just doing them a favor.
|
Part 2: Talking Appropriately SCANS: C7

Part 3: Being Tolerant
SCANS: PQ-F14

Being able to work with people from diverse backgrounds is a must in today's workplace. Students will learn that expressing racial, gender or religious bigotry is absolutely unacceptable as they watch a boss respond to a new employee's request not to work with - believe it or not - him. |
Part 3: Being Self-Controlled SCANS: PQ-F16

If employees can't control their own emotions, particularly anger, they will be disruptive to co-workers, insulting to customers and disobedient to supervisors. Students will learn why it is so important to keep a lid on anger at work. |
Part 3: Behave Appropriately
SCANS: F15

Goofing off, horseplay and intimate touching are not only distracting, they can raise legal and safety issues on the job. Students will learn that bosses quickly weed out employees who treat the workplace as a playground and the people in it as playmates. |

"The rules don't apply to me"
and other WORKPLACE DELUSIONS
|
|
|
Generation ME: The Entitled Employee

Meet five young people who expect special treatment. They come to the workplace assuming that rules don't apply to them, that their needs come first and that the primary function of other people - including the boss - is to look out for their comfort and welfare. They all suffer from delusions of grandeur.
An Old Problem: Faulty Entitlement

If a new employee expects the boss to forgive tardiness, give endless second chances, tolerate "moods", it won't happen. Likewise, a female employee will not receive special treatment because of her good looks. Of course, the boss does not relate like a partent, friend, or admirer. Contrary to the entitled workers' expectations, the boss will not put the needs of the emplyees over the needs of the the job. And therein lies the problem, a problem that often leads to job dismissals.
Message to the Entitled

First Job Survival Skills 3 focuses on correcting mistaken perceptions and expectations young people often have about the workplace: that they are going to be treated special or that their needs are going to come first. |

|
Part 1
The Man Who Mistook His Boss for a Mommy
Workplace Delusion:
Everyone will take care of me.
Your students will learn that the relationship between the boss and the employee is nothing like the relationship with a parent. This one-hour drama is about Hector, who enters the work world expecting the boss to take care of him as his mother did. His misconceptions include thinking that, like his mom, the boss will:
· Always be on his side
· Always come to his rescue
· Always give him another chance
· Overlook his shortcomings
· Always forgive mistakes and accept excuses
· Never ask him to do anything he doesn't want to do
Hector's fantasy of the ideal job, where he is coddled and rules don't apply to him, collides with cold reality when he discovers that the workplace doesn't operate according to his delusions.
|
Part 2A
The Man Who Mistook His Boss for a Homeboy
Workplace Delusion:
Everyone will respect
my superiority
Your students will learn that behaviors acceptable in the neighborhood often are not tolerated in the work environment. This one-hour drama is about Juan, who enters the work world expecting it to reflect his streetwise culture. His misconceptions include thinking his boss and co-workers will:
· Overlook his emotional outbursts
· Accept his resistance to following orders
· Allow him to bend the rules
· Overlook his use of street language and dress
· Tolerate his defiance of authority
· Recognize his superiority
Your students will see how Juan's defiant behavior wears his parents down to resignation. When he goes to find his first job, however, he finds that defiant behavior is not indulged, and to keep his job, Juan is forced to challenge his perceptions about personal conduct in the workplace.

|
|
Part 2B
The Woman Who Mistook Her Boss for an Admirer
Workplace Delusion:
Everyone will adore me
Your students will learn that no matter how important good looks have been in their social life, beauty carries no weight at work compared with job performance. This one-hour drama is about Gin, a spoiled girl who has used her beauty to manipulate to get what she wants. Her misconceptions include thinking her boss and co-workers will:
· Give her special privileges
· Be influenced by her flirtatiousness
· Give her constant attention
· Excuse her from tasks she doesn't want to do
· Accelerate her promotion
· Permit her to make her own rules
Gin's fantasy of the ideal workplace, where she is the center of all attention and can get whatever she wants, collides with reality when she is forced to realize that what a boss values in an employee is hard work and reliability, not a pretty face.
|
Part 3
The Man Who Mistook His Boss for a Promoter
Workplace Delusion:
Everyone will promote my success
Your students will learn that life doesn't come with any guarantees and that success is more related to hard work than good luck. This one-hour drama is about RaDaddy, who one day finds that his relatives and friends will no longer put their needs second to his. His misconceptions included thinking his boss and/or co-workers will:
· Recognize he's "too good for a little job"
· Be awestruck by this potential superstar
· Put him on a fast track for promotion
· Consider his success most important
· Put his needs ahead of company needs
· Make sacrifices to promote his success
Your students will see how RaDaddy's fantasies about what life will be like at work collides with the reality that an employer's only interest in a star is an employee who is a star for them. |
Part 4
The Woman Who Mistook Her Workplace for a Party
Workplace Delusion:
Everyone will want to party
Your students will learn that while at school they may have chosen to put their friends and social agenda first, in the workplace, this choice does not exist. This one-hour drama is about Faith, who enters the workplace with a head full of fantasies about good times and partying. Her misconceptions include thinking her boss and co-workers will:
· Welcome her to the workplace social club
· Embrace her outgoing party personality
· Make her work experience fun
· Always put pleasure before business
· Let her make friends and schedule dates
· Join her in chattering, chattering, chattering
Your students will see how Faith's fantasy workplace collides with reality when she discovers a zero tolerance policy in regard to her non-stop socializing. |
