BeCool Upper Elementary

Students Will Learn to Think Through the Consequences of Their Behavior
Created expressly for learners functioning at the Upper Elementary Level, this 5-module program is the second in the BeCool series and continues the presentation of the BeCool paradigm of self-control and assertion training. This module uses real-life, everyday classic situations to model the effective use of assertive strategies, as well as the ineffective use of passive and aggressive styles in coping with difficult feelings and difficult people.

The Upper Elementary BeCool program is composed of five modules:

Module 1: Coping with Criticism

There is not always a clear difference between helpful criticism and destructive fault finding. This module teaches your kids how to distinguish between valid and invalid criticism and how to cope with each. Your students are presented with classic, real-life situations that model the effective use of assertive strategies. They will watch Cheryl react to her dad’s fair criticism of her messy room (yes, sometimes parents are right), and see Diane respond to what appears to be unfair criticism from her teacher. They will also see how Nathan handles Emily’s hysterical accusations about a missing (stolen?) backpack. Finally, they will learn the dead-end consequences of a COLD (victim-like) or a HOT (hothead) reaction to criticism no matter if it’s fair or not. 38 mins

Includes:
· 1 DVD (with teacher-parent video) or 3 VHS tapes and one teacher-parent tape
· Teacher’s guide

Module 1: $149

Module 2: Coping with Teasing

In this module your students will watch Jason and George cope with hurtful teasing from older kids in a very public place: a video arcade. Your students will identify with their discomfort as they try to learn a new arcade game while being relentlessly teased and taunted. They have three ways to react; your class will see where each of the three choices takes them. In another vignette your students will see Danny deal with teasing from the kids in his class when he shows up at school wearing his new glasses. In part three, your kids will see how Amy uses the 4-Step Plan to stop hurtful teasing from her big brother. They will see her successfully set firm limits with him. This vignette once again emphasizes the problem with a COLD or HOT response to teasing: it usually results in more teasing and loss of self-esteem. 36 mins

· 1 DVD (with teacher-parent video) or 3 VHS tapes and one teacher-parent tape

Module 3: Coping with Bullying

In this module your students will see how Jason and George avoid being “bully magnets” (being irresistible to bullies) by assuming an anti-victim demeanor. As children get older, the problems with bullying become greater and potentially much more dangerous. Your students need to become comfortable and prepared with a variety of correct responses that are more likely to diffuse bullying than escalate it. Next, your class will see Jodi use the 4-Step Plan to counter the bullying peer pressure from her friends who want her to ditch school.  Students encounter peer pressure every day, and they are challenged with greater and greater opportunities for getting into trouble or getting hurt, all in the name of friendship. In another scene they’ll watch Willie fend off the pressure to drink alcohol and will also see Brian “Talk the Talk” and then “Walk the Walk” (go to authority) to retrieve his stolen backpack. 48 mins

Includes:
· 1 DVD (with teacher-parent video) or 4 VHS tapes and one teacher-parent tape

Module 4: Coping with Anger Others & Self

In these two modules your students will learn how to effectively respond to anger coming from someone else and directed at them (Anger/Others), as well as the anger originating from inside themselves (Anger/Self). Your class will see how Phil copes with Ted’s anger when he accidentally trips him. They’ll see Amanda dealing with her sister’s anger when she interrupts her favorite TV show. Students will learn from Rachel how to recognize when another person’s anger might be dangerous. They will see Tad use the 4-Step Plan to express his anger and disappointment with his buddy over a broken agreement. These are all typical scenarios for this age group. 79 mins
