Middle School 2

Resolution: Negotiation Skills
BeCool Give & Take

BeCool Give & Take expands the BeCool Middle School series beyond coping with provocation to actually teach kids how to negotiate long-term resolution of disputes. Students will learn how to use proven negotiation techniques to work out solutions to differences without involving demands, threats or intimidation.

BeCool Middle School 2 is composed of four modules:

Module 1: Give & Take vs. Demands

Your students will learn that there are more effective ways to settle differences than making demands. Demanding as a negotiation style translates into “my way or the highway,” which is ineffective and engenders bad feelings. This module teaches students how to negotiate disagreements reasonably and fairly. They are introduced to the concept of win-win negotiation and will see how this approach benefits both sides. Win-win agreements depend on using an external standard of fairness that is convincing to both parties. See Kenny, after trying to get a real steal on the video game his friend is selling, use this fairness principle to negotiate the sale. Students will see their peers working things out – stumbling first and then being COOL. 28 mins

Module 2: Give & Take vs. Intimidation

Your students will learn how to negotiate a truce and fair compensation. Negotiating an agreement to end a dispute or ongoing fight is best done with the help of an impartial, but trusted, third party. Your students will see how Jennifer uses a mutual friend to negotiate an end to a vicious rumor war she is having with Trish. See how when two friends are involved in a negotiation, one sometimes succumbs to emotional blackmail—not good if they are interested in a long term relationship. Your students will watch Johnny try to use emotional blackmail to avoid paying for a friend’s bike that he lost. Eventually, after trying unsuccessfully to dodge his responsibility for losing the bike, the pair COOLLY negotiates fair compensation.

Module 3: Give & Take vs. Threats

Students will learn that changing the rules at home can be tricky, especially with parents who “know what’s best.” See how Robert tries to change the rules so he could go to a party and stay out past curfew. First we see him try a COLD, pleading approach that his mother responds to with emotional blackmail. After an attempt at HOT negotiation, Robert finally remains calm, shows respect, and continues to negotiate. Part 2 shows that settling differences with authority figures requires respect and the negotiation of an agreement that considers both sides. Using threats to try to influence anyone is a bad idea. After two false starts, see Justin use the powerful win-win technique to convince an employer that even though he’s a kid, his part-time job should pay better. 35 mins

Module 4: Give & Take vs. Insolence

Your students will see how authority figures can be approached and persuaded to compromise. First, they’ll see Jill try to negotiate a grade change with a tough teacher. Her unsuccessful attempts are first COLD (whining and pleading), then HOT (insolent and demanding). Finally, her COOL negotiation style considers the deal and the relationship. Next, students learn the importance of knowing how to negotiate with the police and others in authority. Watch as Luke and Billy are stopped for a curfew violation and illustrate the negative result of taking COLD and HOT approaches. There are always negative consequences of being uncooperative with authority; positive results are more likely with a cooperative win-win approach.29 mins
