Winner of the New York Film Festival, BeCool: High School is the original program of the series, which focuses on high school-age students and young adults as they make the transition to the “real world.” The video scenarios depict ordinary conflicts of daily living and shows students how emotions, not managed effectively, can result in aggressive behavior, social withdrawal and loss of self-esteem.
BeCool High School is composed of four modules:
Module 1: Teasing
Teach your students how to deal with teasing, one of the most common problems among young adults and especially difficult for students with special needs. Teasing can result in aggressive behavior, social withdrawal, and loss of self-esteem. Your students will learn to distinguish friendly from hurtful teasing and how to deal with it using a variety of COOL responses rather than with withdrawal or aggression: ignoring it and/or laughing it off, changing the subject or asking the teaser to stop. Models how to carry out each these techniques and demonstrates under what conditions each one would be appropriate. 33 mins

Module 2: Anger
Who doesn’t have a difficult time dealing with anger? Dealing with anger is a very challenging task for most people. Your teenage and adult students with special needs will benefit from learning how to respond when confronted by difficult people or difficult situations when anger is flying. Help your students understand why people become angry, how to distinguish fair from unfair anger and how to recognize when someone’s anger is becoming dangerous (particularly when alcohol or drugs are involved). Your students will learn to identify the negative results of HOT or COLD responses to anger. This presentation of real-life situations allows students to see the evolution of the behaviors being studied. 48 mins

Module 3: Criticism
Criticism can really hurt! Even we mature adults recoil at the thought of being criticized by our peers or loved ones. Criticism can cause resentment, misunderstanding, and social withdrawal. Knowing how to cope with criticism will help your students improve their performance while maintaining their self-confidence. With this module you’ll define criticism for students, help them to distinguish valid from invalid criticism, and understand why people criticize. This 4-part BeCool module presents to your students the opportunity to observe real-life people in real-life situations coping with criticism. They will see in each of the vignettes how a bad start with either a COLD or HOT response gets them nowhere. They will see examples of several successful COOL responses and will have follow-up activities to practice them. 52 mins

Module 4: Bullying
Dealing with bullying is a very challenging task for most of us. Certainly bullies on the school ground, particularly dangerous bullies, have received considerable attention from the media. In this module students will gain a new perspective on bullying, and will start to understand bullying and learn why people bully. Most important, they will learn to recognize dangerous bullies. With the information provided in the BeCool programs and follow-up activities, you will help minimize the negative impact of bullying on your students. The results of being the victim of a bully can include severe distress, physical injury, and damage to self-esteem. In this module your students will see three examples of the best solutions to bullying: anti-victim strategies, ignore/proceed, and get help – modeled by peers their own age.
